Curriculum
Week 1:Â Know the Markets
Commercial design is focused work. This lesson is about understanding where your designs can actually sell, so every brief you work to has a real buyer in mind.Â
Week 2: How to Interpret a Brief
Most designers read a brief. We teach you to read between the lines. You'll learn how to decode a trend board and understand what a buyer is really asking for, so your work hits the mark.
Week 3: First Design Brief- Natural Forms
Your first brief. You'll download your storyboard, set yourself a real commercial deadline, and submit your work for feedback from the LPD studio team.
Week 4: Second Design Brief + How to Make the Perfect Foliage Design
We walk you through a foliage brief with specific dos and don'ts from 35 years of selling this type of design. Then you go away and build it.
Week 5: Illustrated Floral Design Brief
This one is more demanding. Two floral briefs to choose from, each with targeted guidance on what makes a floral design sell. Submit your work for critique.
Week 6:Â The Importance of Colour
Colour is a commercial decision, not just an aesthetic one. We share the colour thinking behind designs that actually sell, then you apply it: create a colourway from your Week 5 design and see the difference it makes.
Week 7:Â Design Limitations for production
This lesson will save you hours of rework. We cover the technical design decisions that affect how a print is produced, so you stop creating problems you didn't know you were making.
Week 8:Â Tropical Design Brief
Specific guidance on what works and what doesn't in tropical design, then you build one. Your fifth portfolio piece.
Week 9:Â Happy Floral Brief
Happy florals are some of the most commercially reliable designs you can make. We raise the difficulty level here. Submit your work for a personalised critique from the LPD leaders.
Week 10: Animal Skin Brief
Buyers come back for animal skins every season. Master them and you have a reliable income stream. Submit your designs for feedback.
Week 11:Â Photoshop Hacks: Immense Floral
For the final three briefs, the focus shifts to speed and process. We give you specific Photoshop shortcuts that make your output viable as a commercial proposition.
Week 12:Â Photoshop Hacks: Boho Stamp
A boho-inspired brief with techniques for producing this style of print at real-world commercial pace. Work to the clock.
Week 14:Â Portfolio Guide
We show you what a standout portfolio looks like with real examples from Longina Phillips designers. Use what you see to build and submit yours for final feedback.

Hear From Our Students
What was the best part?Â
"Getting that feedback and also being part of a group that's learning [together], I think everyone's very collaborative."
Â
- Barb Saxe, USA
What was your biggest ah-ha moment?
"The recolour brief. You can have an ordinary design but if you get the colours right, it's like, wow, that looks amazing, just by changing the colour."
Â
 - Allison Langton, AUSTRALIA
What was your favourite part of the course?
"The briefs. Because I'm disconnected from fashion, it's a pleasure to have a brief that is compact and has all the information about a segment of a market, it's wonderful."
Â
- Agnes Onody, Luxemburg
Meet Your Instructors
We're proud creators of stunning textile designs selling to over 3000 brands, globally. Weâve been industry-leaders and at the fore-front of fashion for over 35 years.
Sara
Sara is CEO and Head of Sales at Longina Phillips Designs. She runs the business and travels the world, presenting collections to buyers across every major market. That combination is rare: the strategic view of someone who has built and managed a global studio, alongside the ground-level knowledge of someone who is in front of clients every season. She knows what brands are looking for right now, and why. All of that comes into the classroom. No gatekeeping. Just everything she knows, shared openly.
Bec K
Bec is the Creative Director of Longina Phillips Designs, one of the most respected surface design studios in the world. For more than 25 years she has been directing the creative output of the LPD studio, shaping collections that sell to some of the world's most recognised brands. She knows what buyers want before they ask. She knows which design decisions will cost you the sale and which ones get you called back next season. That depth of commercial judgment is what she brings to The Print School. Bec leads all course development and delivery, making sure everything taught here comes directly from what is working in the studio right now.
